Welcome to valldelaguar.com, this is a website dedicated to the Vall de Laguar. Hidden in the mountains of the Marina Alta and regarded as 'the pearl of Valencia', Vall de Laguar is not only beautiful, but steeped in history and intrigue. The website is also the home of Bars de Laguar an association set up to appreciate all the local bars. This website is still in the early stages of development, but I will add to it when I can, so enjoy what is here and bookmark us for future updates. How to get there by car:

To get to the Vall de Laguar by car - From Javea take the N332 and CV 732 to Pedreguer. From Pedreguer take the CV 733 to Benidoleig and Orba. On leaving Orba there is a bit of a dog-leg: Turn Left onto the CV715 signposted Callosa d'en Sarria (also signposted Centro Urba). After about 200m turn Right onto the CV718 signposted Val de Laguart & Fontilles. After climbing out of the valley this road joins the CV 721 which comes in from the right. Continue through Campell to Fleix. Park on the right near a playground, just as the road leaves Fleix and swings to the left (KM10).

The Val de Laguar

The Val de Laguart is a chain of villages overlooking the gorge as you climb up the valley: Campell, Fleix, Benimaurell. This area was the last stronghold of the descendents of the Moors who were forcibly expelled in 1609. There is a story, half legend, about the final stand of the moors on the Caballo Verde Ridge, which runs above these villages on the south side of the valley. The valley was repopulated by people from the island of Mallorca in 1611, and today you will still find some families with Mallorcan family names in these villages.

Val de Laguart (which is the name of the valley of the Barranco del Infierno gorge) obtains its name from the arabic "Al-Agwar" which means "the caves".
The Caball Vert - (Valenciano for Green Horse - Caballo Verde in Castillian).
The Sierra del Penyo Roig (or Serra del Penyal de Laguart) is sometimes also called the Cavall (Caball) Vert ridge (although on the official maps this name refers only to the easternmost portion of the ridge)
Ezzme de Laguart, 1580-1609: sorceress and healer. She incited people to rebel against the expulsion edict by spreading the prophecy of the green horse. .
In 1609, at the order of their improvised King Mellini and with the colaboration of Ezme, the beautiful witch from Laguar, 1500 rebels converged around the green horse, the modern day Vall de Laguart rock, and the villages of Campeill, Fleix and Benimaurell, ready to resist expulsion.

The People

An eclectic mix of locals and visitors spanning all nationalities frequent this lively spacious bar restaurant. The local Valencian dialect, Castellon Spanish and English are spoken in equal measure by the staff and customers alike and there really is a great atmosphere when the bar is filled with opinionated men and animated excitable women!

Each and every visitor to our bar is always made to feel welcome and will most certainly enjoy the atmosphere and food available.

The Walks

The rugged mountains of the Marina Alta offer wonderful walking in a landscape of breath taking ridges, deep canyons, and shelter under pines. Time stands still as you rest against the 500 year old stone walls, built by the original people, and still standing today. The Tolkien landscape is broken up by cherry and almond groves with numerous paths left by wild boar and other native animals, as well as well marked walking routes. Attractive mountain villages provide hospitality, offering a taste of the real Spain, far removed in character from the developed coastal strip. The Vall de Laguar, is one of the best kept secretes of the Marina Alta, made up of 3 villages, Campell, Fliex, and the jewel in the crown Benimuarell. These are only a few of the many walks in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
