The 500 Steps

This walk is a "Classic" of the area. The "5000 steps" refers to the 5946 stair-case steps of the Mozarabic trail. Each year at the end of October the villages of the Val de Laguar organise a mass walk along this route, ending with a hearty meal (puchero - type of stew) and souvenir T shirt for having survived the ordeal!

The walks of the Val de Laguar
The rugged mountains of the Marina Alta offer wonderful walking in a landscape of breath taking ridges, deep canyons, and shelter under pines. Time stands still as you rest against the 500 year old stone walls, built by the original people, and still standing today. The Tolkien landscape is broken up by cherry and almond groves with numerous paths left by wild boar and other native animals, as well as well marked walking routes. Attractive mountain villages provide hospitality, offering a taste of the real Spain, far removed in character from the developed coastal strip. The Vall de Laguar, is one of the best kept secretes of the Marina Alta, made up of 3 villages, Campell, Fliex, and the jewel in the crown Benimuarell. These are only a few of the many walks in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
